What are Your Business Goals?

What are your business goals? I know a saying that is a favourite of a friend of mine, and it is: "If you aim at nothing, you will have amazing accuracy".

This goes for both your personal and professional life, but today I’m talking about your business goals, which of course will probably spill over into your personal life, especially when there are financial and personal rewards.

Many people in business decide to go into business with the hope that it will be successful and make them a lot of money so they can live the "good life". The reality for most is that they’re spending almost 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on their business, and many don’t see much in the way of results.

Of all of these people, one thing they will have in common is that they have not set any specific business goals for themselves.

If you don’t have a goal, then how will you know where you’re going? I’m a HUGE advocate of goal setting, hence my post today.  I have achieved some great things in my life, and these things all resulted from a compelling goal.

So how do you set yourself a business goal?

My usual piece of advice for my coaching clients (I’m a qualified Life Coach) is to start with the end in mind.

So what do you want for your business? How do you want it to look in ten years?  What products or services will you be offering, how successful will it be, and how will this success affect you personally?

Now is the time to think BIG!  Don’t worry if others might think you’re crazy for even setting a goal this big – this is for you and you alone.  In fact, you don’t even have to show anybody what your goal is!  Just as long as you know what it is, you’re on the right path.

Make sure your goal is specific and measurable so you can track your progress, and include a timeline – when do you want to achieve this by?

One thing to remember here is that you may find yourself in a year wondering if you’re on the right path, and that’s perfectly ok.  Goals and their respective timelines should be reviewed regularly, so you can make the necessary adjustments to keep yourself on track.

Next, it is time to set out a plan.  How do you plan to get there?  Break your goal into tiny "chunks" or "mini goals".  Put timelines on these too.

All you have to do now is write your goal and your mini goals down, then start taking action.  Before long you will be looking back, knowing that you have built a successful business and a wonderful life for yourself!
